SATURDAY UPDATE:  Two Storm Systems Next 4 Days

Today should be a pretty nice early February day.  The weather should cooperate for the Mardi Gras activities in Millbrook, Montgomery and elsewhere.  But, stand by…changes are fast approaching.  We have two storm systems in a very short 4 day window.  The first one begins to affect us tonight, through mid day Sunday. The second, stronger storm system will dump a decent amount of rainfall Tuesday night & Wednesday.

TODAY:  After a freezing start this morning, we should see a nice recovery. There will be a good bit of sun.  Our high will reach near 57.  (that’s not far from our normal high of 59) A southeast breeze at 10-15 mph will make it seem cooler.  Tonight, will be cloudy.  Rain will spread into the area, with leading edge coming in between 9PM and Midnight.  Low tonight 44.

STORM SYSTEM #1:  The moves in tonight.  It continues through the overnight hours, through Sunday morning and it now looks like most of the rain it will exit the area near or around lunchtime.  Rainfall amounts of .5 to near 1.5” are a good bet.  Here’s a look at some Future Radar snapshots and the expected rainfall through Sunday.  A few thunderstorms can’t be ruled out, especially in south Alabama, but certainly nothing severe from the first storm system.

STORM SYSTEM #2:  The second storm system will be a much bigger deal, than the first one.  It will affect the area Tuesday night and through much of Wednesday.  Rainfall amounts could be rather significant in parts of our state.  Right now, it appears some thunderstorms will be involved. While gusty winds are possible in some of the stronger storms, at the moment,  the severe weather risk appears to be on the low side.  SPC has not put us in a severe risk, but SPC does say:  “low severe weather probabilities may be introduced in future forecasts”  We will monitor.  We are, of course, rapidly approaching severe weather season.  This rainfall probability map shows the total rainfall potential from storm system #1 and #2.  This, hopefully will help our increasing drought.

NEXT FEW DAYS:   The best days will be today and Monday.  Otherwise, we have a very active 5 days ahead.  The coldest morning is this morning, and the warmest day will be Tuesday.

Whether you have Mardi Gras plans today, or maybe a Super bowl party plans tomorrow, I hope you have a great weekend. There will be another blog post in the morning. I’ll have your next complete video will be Monday morning, posted by 4:45AM.  Have a great weekend!
