FRIDAY UPDATE:   Few Strong Storms Today/Tonight – Sharply Cooler Air Ahead

Big changes are on the way.  A strong cold front is approaching.  Showers and storms will precede the front today and tonight.  A few stronger storms area possible.  Get ready for a big change.

The air behind this front is sharply cooler.  Much of the eastern half of the United States is in for a late season shocker. We will be close to a record low on Sunday morning that has stood for 116 years.

But, the chill won’t last for two long.  Looks like we’ll see a significant warming trend next week.

TODAY:  The morning will be dry. The risk of thunderstorms begins this afternoon. It will be windy today with south winds 10 to 20+ mph.  High today upper 70’s.  Showers and storms become numerous and likely by late this afternoon and this evening before ending later tonight.  Breezy and colder much colder overnight.  Low 46.

FEW STRONG STORMS:  The Storm Prediction Center has part of central and south Alabama in a Marginal Severe Weather Risk later this afternoon and into tonight.  Extreme west Alabama is under a Level 2 ‘Slight Risk’.  Damaging wind gusts are the main threat.

Future radar snapshots shows a few hours late this afternoon and tonight.  Never take Future Radar literally.  It’s just a model idea of what radar might look like at those hours.

MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND COOL-SNAP:    The chunk of cold air coming out of Canada, into the United States this weekend is rather historic for May.  It has arctic origins.  Many record lows will be in jeopardy across the eastern half of the country.  Snow is possible in parts of the Great Lakes and the Northeast.

The record for Montgomery on Sunday morning is 43 from 1906.  It is certainly possible we could tie or break it.  30’s  will be widespread across North Alabama.

NEXT FEW DAYS:  Following the sharp weekend cool-snap, there will be a nice afternoon recovery on Mother’s Day afternoon.  Highs will rebound to the upper 70’s.  Big warming trend Monday through Wednesday.

GREETINGS FROM ORANGE BEACH:  The weather has been beautiful here. It’s nice to be back on the coast.  Chase is visiting for the first time.  Here’s a few Thursday snapshots.   It will be quite stormy here by this evening, and sharply cooler over the weekend.  But, after weeks of isolation, it’s nice to take a trip.

I will have another Blog Update for you tomorrow morning.    Stay safe and well.
