Delta Rapidly Intensifying – Expected to Become a Major Cat. 3 Hurricane In The Gulf

4:00PM UPDATE:

Air Force Recon indicates Delta is rapidly intensifying. Winds have reached 70 mph. It’s likely to become a hurricane soon, and will reach Major hurricane status before landfall on the Yucatan coast Tuesday. Delta will undergo some wind shear by Thursday and Friday in the northwest Gulf which will weaken the Hurricane a little. Still, though, it’s expected to cross the north central US Gulf as a category two hurricane on Friday. Current location 245 SSE of Grand Cayman, moving west at 8 mph. Hurricane Warning issued for the Yucatan Coast. Here’s the technical meat and potatoes from NHC, if you care:

EARLY MORNING UPDATE:

Good Morning! We’re starting this week on a nice note, but unfortunately there is yet another hurricane threat for the northern Gulf Coast late this week. The track currently points in the general direction of the north central Gulf coast. It’s now Trop. Storm Delta, expected to be a hurricane tomorrow. Then, it will intensify in the Gulf. We will be monitoring Delta’s future very carefully as the week goes on. We could see a Friday landfall along the northern Gulf coast. All of Alabama is in the cone of uncertainty. We will be monitoring Delta’s future very carefully as the week goes on.  We could see a Friday landfall along the northern Gulf coast.

GAMMA is a 50 mph Tropical Storm just hanging around close to the Yucatan Penn. It willbe eventually absorbed by the Future Hurricane Delta

T.D. 26, south of Jamaica will become Tropical Storm Delta later today when it gets close to the Cayman Islands and then become a hurricane near western Cuba tomorrow, Then, it will grow into a Cat 2 hurricane in the central Gulf. Could make landfall somewhere on the northern Gulf coast Friday as a Cat 2 hurricane, much like Sally.

Obvisouly it’s too early to talk about rainfall amounts. It will depend of the exact track of the hurricane.
