NEW YEAR DAY Update:  Comfortable Start to New Year  – Tuesday Severe Weather Risk

Happy New Year!  It’s an ugly start early on this New Years Day, with Dense Fog in spots and even some drizzle.  BUT, expect big improvements, especially by this afternoon with some sunshine and very comfortable temperatures.  High in the middle 70’s is a great way to start the New Year.  But, there’s a major storm system in our future next week.  Showers and storms will be numerous, particularly Tuesday.  Severe weather is a good bet.  Rainfall could be excessive.  Much cooler air will follow the big storm.  Here’s my very brief forecast discussion.

TODAY:   Dense Fog Advisory until 10:00AM.    It’s an ugly start early on this New Years Day, with the Dense Fog and even some drizzle.  BUT, expect big improvements especially by this afternoon with some sunshine.  High today mid 70’s Partly cloudy tonight. Patchy fog late tonight.  Low tonight 53.

NEXT FEW DAYS:    Next week will be rather unsettled from Monday night through Wednesday.  The risk pf showers could begin by late Monday afternoon. Showers and storms will be numerous, particularly Tuesday.  Severe weather is a good bet.  Rainfall could be locally heavy.  Much cooler air will follow the storm.

SPC Severe Outlook Monday looks ominous.  Significant threat in the ArkLaTex region, spreading eastward to Alabama Tuesday.  All modes of severe weather including tornadoes. The threat level will not be nearly as high Tuesday, when the system arrives in Alabama.  But, still, there would be damaging wind gusts and perhaps a few tornadoes.

Locally heavy rainfall is possible across the Gulf South, especially closer to the coast.

Here’s the 10 day Model Temperature trend.  It turns much cooler behind the mid-week storm system next week.  We could be teasing the freeze mark by Friday and Saturday AM. But, no extreme cold is in the outlook for now.

A southern Tradition. Happy New Year!

I’ll have another update for you in the morning.  Have a nice first day of 2023!
