TORNADO WATCH UPDATE

9:45 PM UPDATE:

TORNADO WATCH FOR MUCH OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH ALABAMA AS FAR EAST AS LEE, MACON, MONTGOMERY AND CRENSHAW COUNTY UNTIL 4AM.  Damaging wind to 70+ mph and large hail are also a threat.

EARLIER UPDATE:

The reason for this special Monday PM update is to try to create awareness and to emphasize a few points.  The risk of tornadoes will continue overnight in much of Alabama.   The greatest risk will be in Central, Eastern and Southeast Alabama. In fact, the severe weather risk could last well after sunrise across the southeast third of Alabama.  Needless to say, a tornado threat at night is very dangerous.  Unfortunately, we deal with this too often here in Dixie Alley.

Already today, there have been significant tornadoes over parts of west Mississippi and Louisiana producing significant damage.  .   watch past 7AM.  Additional Watches and warnings will continue overnight, and southeast Alabama will  probably still have a tornado

It is very important that you have multiple sources to receive a watch or a warning.  Our weather App will instantly alert you.  We hope you have it on your phone or tablet.  It also has an audible cue, if you have not turned that feature off.  It will announce you are under a warning.  We also hope you have a Weather Radio, which can sound a siren and wake you up if there is a warning.  Do not depend on hearing outside tornado sirens.  They are designed to be heard OUTSIDE.  You may sleep through the sirens.  If that is your main source for warning…it is NOT adequate.

A Level 2 Slight Risk covers MOST of Alabama.  However an Enhanced risk covers west central Alabama west of a Selma to Tuscaloosa line.  This where the greatest threat of tornadoes exists.

Here’s a sample of some Future Radar snapshots during the overnight hours.  View these with caution.  Don’t take the time or position of storms literally.    NOTICE, it is NOT one solid line of storms.  We will be dealing with a band of individual Supercell thunderstorms. Some will rotate and produce tornadoes.  A number of them will produce tornadoes.  The band doesn’t make much progress between 11PM and 3AM.  The band will shift to SE Alabama after Dawn.

Stay Weather Aware tonight.  I’ll do my very BEST to keep you up to date…   Including, online,  on the Bluewater family of radio stations, and I will be standing by for cutways on Channel 8 and 32 at times.  Our weather App will be your best friend.
