WEDNESDAY Update:   Storm System Slows – Colder Air Will Follow

Good Morning!  Our Spring-like warmth continues.  Yesterday’s high was 76.  Today we’ll tease 80°, which is more like Late April.  A storm system is approaching.  There could be some strong/severe storms when this system arrives in west Alabama in the overnight hours.  But, the front will slow.  Showers & storms are a good bet for Thursday.  Much cooler air will funnel into the state Friday night and Saturday.  But, the big chill will not last long. Looks like we’ll have to hang onto a risk of scattered showers Saturday, as an upper low drifts over the region.   Here’s my brief forecast discussion.

TODAY:   Is it February or late April?  Today’s high temperature will be nearly 20 degrees above normal.  High temperature near 80.  Risk of some widely scattered showers by late afternoon.  South wind 5 to 10 mph.  Cloudy, very mild tonight.  Risk of showers and thunderstorms in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday morning.

From SPC, the Marginal Severe Risk shifts as far east as the I-65 corridor by abut 6AM.  Damaging wind gusts us the main threat.

THURSDAY:  The front will slow up.  The line of strong/severe storms will tend to weaken a bit before reaching the I-65 corridor during the morning rush hour.

As the front stalls the risk of showers and storms will continue across central & south Alabama.  High near 70.

The best chance of strong to severe storms will be south of the front on Thursday.  Marginal Severe Risk.

NEXT FEW DAYS:    Colder air will follow the storm system, especially Friday night into Saturday. Fortunately, the cold will not last long.  The coldest day will be Saturday. High in the lower 50’s at best.  Breezy.  Can’t rule out some showers.  Coldest morning will be Sunday morning.  Mid 60’s return Monday, so the cold will not last long.   Mid 70’s will return by the middle of next week.

One complicating factor in the weekend forecast involves an upper low which will migrate eastward across the Gulf states.  Looks like we’ll need to hang onto a chance of scattered showers Saturday.
