Good morning! On this last day of May, our weather is slowly “evolving”. We are edging closer and closer to that typical summertime pattern. We’ll be going from “comfortable” to a more muggy environment. Spotty, random hit or miss storms will start to pop up today and Thursday. They’ll be around each day through Sunday, mostly in the afternoon & evening hours. A weak low in the Gulf will have little or no effect on Alabama’s weather. The hurricane season officially begins tomorrow. Today is the last day of Meteorological Spring. Meteorological Summer starts tomorrow. Here’s my brief forecast discussion.
CLIMATE DATA: Tuesday’s morning low was a cool 55 at MGM. Afternoon high was a very comfortable 84. Normal hi/lo: 89 and 65. No rain at the airport.
TODAY: Sun/Cloud mix. Warmer, a little more humid. High 88. Spotty, random showers & storms, especially afternoon & evening, fading out at night. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Partly cloudy tonight. Low 68.
Here’s a Future Radar model example at 6:30 pm. Random “pop-up” storms. No rhyme or reason. Airmass thunderstorms.
DEWPOINTS WILL RISE: It’s going to start to feel noticeably more humid. Yesterday the dewpoints were in the 50’s. That’s nice. We’re headed for the 60’s today and possibly near 70 tomorrow. The sixties start to feel more and more uncomfortable. The 70’s are close to unbearable, but that’s where we stay much of the summer here in the Deep South.
NEXT FEW DAYS: Wednesday will feel more like summertime. We’ll be in the upper 80’s. Random PM showers and storms return Wednesday through Saturday, mainly in the afternoon & evening hours. We’ll be near 90 Friday and lower 90’s Saturday.
TROPICAL DISTURBANCE: NHC has an Area to Watch in the Gulf. This system only has a remote 10% chance of any tropical development as it meanders from the Gulf to east of Florida over the weekend.
Right now this system has colder air aloft. A true tropical system is warm at the bottom and warm all the way up.
BEACH FORECAST: Pretty routine weekend Beach Forecast. That Gulf disturbance will probably have a minimal effect on the forecast.
