Good Morning! A Winter Weather Advisory continues in effect in central Alabama as far south as Autauga. Elmore and Lee counties. Very early this morning, a mixture of rain/snow/sleet could cause some slippery spots, especially on bridges and overpasses. For most of us along the US 80/I-85 corridor, the mix will turn to just rain fairly early around 7am or so. Then, expect periods of a Cold Rain most of day and well into the evening hours tonight. NO accumulation is expected locally. However, snow accumulation becomes more likely farther north in the state. Travel over about the northern third of state will become very hazardous, in the Winter Storm Warning area. Here’s my brief video forecast discussion.
TODAY: Wintry mix early this morning, mostly before 7AM. (Rain/snow/sleet) Then it turns to just a Cold Rain. No accumulation is expected. East wind 11 to 16 mph. High near 40. Rain ending before 9PM. Wind gusts as high as 25 mph tonight. Low 32.
Here’s the map set up, as low pressure rides along the northern Gulf coast, today and exits the area later tonight.
FUTURE RADAR: The main threat for mixed wintry precipitation will be very early this morning. Much of the day will just be a cold rain. The rain will pick up in intensity by early afternoon and begin to taper off and move out by about 9PM tonight.
IMPACT: The worst travel conditions today will mainly be across the northern third of the state in the Winter Storm Warning area. Along the US 80/I-85 corridor, some slippery spots are likely, especially on bridges and overpasses in the early morning commute hours. South of this area, mostly rain is expected.
Note on the map as the impact level increases north of Clanton and through the Birmingham metro . Some road closures are possible. Some accumulations are a good bet. Farther north in the state, travel could become nearly impossible.
The greatest threat for accumulating snow will generally be across about the northern quarter of the state,

NEXT FEW DAYS: The weekend looks mostly sunny and cold. Saturday’s high will struggle to reach 40. Low 20’s are expected Sunday morning. The extended cold will continue Monday and Tuesday.
Here’s the 10 day model blend temperature trend. The Arctic Grip continues. Some days show a brief recovery, but as you can see, MOST of the next 10 days continue well below normal.
