SATURDAY UPDATE:  Front Brings Storm Threat Today

Parts of Alabama had record flooding rainfall yesterday.   For some of you, rain has just been a rumor.  There hasn’t been much rain at all, so far, in east and southeast Alabama with this storm system.  Look at Storm Total Rainfall so far.

All of that will change today as a cold front crosses the state, with a line of strong, potentially severe thunderstorms ahead of the front. Yesterday there were at least 6 tornadoes in west and SW Alabama, causing lots of damage.  Here’s the map set up at 1:00PM, showing the front on the AL/MS line, moving eastward.

Marginal Severe Weather Risk today for most of our state.  Damaging wind gusts are the main threat, but, like yesterday, tornadoes can’t be ruled out.  Our weather app will keep you on top of the action.

This map from NWS Birmingham helps with the potential timing.

TODAY:  Windy. Wind Advisory in effect.  Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Risk of showers just about anytime, but the greatest risk of thunderstorms will be this afternoon  as the front moves through.  Humid.  Today’s high near 80.  Future radar shows the progression of the main line of storms from west Alabama at 11AM to central Alabama by 2PM.  The line will be in the eastern counties by 4PM.

NEXT FEW DAYS:  Nice weather will follow the front for a couple of days.  Sunday will start cloudy and then become sunny.  Sunday and Monday will be nice.  Showers return Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of the next strong front.  Much cooler air begins to move in on Halloween.  It’s too early to say if there will be a severe weather risk with the next front.

Stay weather aware today.  Make sure you have our weather app downloaded on your phone.  It will instantly alert you to severe weather warnings for your location.  (Go to the App store and search Rich Thomas Weather)  I will have another Blog update tomorrow morning.  Have a nice weekend!

Wet at Times – Updated Rain Chance and Amounts – FRIDAY VIDEO

NHC issues Advisory #1 on Tropical Depression 17 in the western Gulf. Expected to become ‘A gale-force Post Tropical Low tonight, as it becomes absorbed by a frontal system. The system will move off rapidly toward the north and northeast later today. #TD17

Happy Friday!   A very complicated storm system will have a big effect on Alabama’s weather for at least the next couple of the days.  Parts of the state could see excessive rainfall, and other areas may not see much.  The timeline has changed, the projected rainfall amounts have changed.  Many outdoor events are on the line.  On this video, I’ll update you on the new details.  Will a Gulf Tropical Depression further complicate the  situation?  And, get ready.  A strong influx of Much Cooler air could arrive by Halloween.

Rainfall potential amounts range from excessive in West Alabama near the Mississippi line to …not much in the southeast counties.

Wet today and Saturday, but I have removed rain chances for Sunday and Monday.  More showers possible Tuesday.

Significant Cold Front approaches the state Wednesday night.  Could see some strong storms ahead of the front.  Much cooler air funnels into the state on Halloween.

Last Dry Day – Periods of Rain Next Few Days– THURSDAY VIDEO

Good Morning!  Our string of nice Fall days is coming to and end.  Today will be dry & comfortable with increasing clouds.  Rain will overspread the area in the overnight hours.  Periods of rain will be in our future for the next few days. It won’t rain all the time.  Several disturbances will affect the area.  In fact, it’s a possible a Tropical Low in the Gulf will also be involved.  All this points to beneficial rain over the next 5-6 days especially.  How much rain?  Who will see the most rainfall?  I’ll show the details of complicated forecast on your Thursday morning video.

Last, Dry, comfortable quiet day today before rain arrives in the middle of the night.

Multiple disturbance will be interacting with a couple of fronts.  It’s a complicated forecast.  Bottom line…periods of rain will drench the Gulf south.  A tropical Gulf Low will likely get involved and be one of the players, too.

Periods of rain for the next several days.

STRONG Cold front arrives on Halloween.  Coldest air of the season so far, just in time for the first weekend of November.

Here’s RAW numbers from the GFS.   Don’t pay attention to specific numbers… We’re just looking at trends..

Perfect Fall Day Today – Rain Returning Late Week – WEDNESDAY VIDEO

Good Morning!  It’s a chilly Fall morning, but get ready for a text-book perfect day ahead.  Beautiful.  Jackets will be needed tonight, again.  Our next storm system could bring rain back to the state by the wee hours of Friday morning.  And, the risk of rain and some thunderstorms could affect some weekend plans.  Although, the models are still struggling with the details of how this storm system will evolve.  We’ll dive into the details, the timing and how much rain could fall through the next few days.

Just a perfect Fall Day today.  Simply put.  Could not be better.  Jacket weatrher again tonight.

Rain could return in the pre-dawn hours of Friday…and periods of rain are a good bet Friday, especially over the western half of the state.

Uh oh.  I’ve had to take the rain chances up for Saturday.  Showers and thunderstorms are a good bet.  That could affect some plans.  Could this be a developing severe weather situation?  Too early to say…  Suspicious.

Nice again Thursday.  Periods of rain and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday.  Small risk of showers Sunday.  I’ve got Monday dry for now.

Some parts of Alabama could see some rather significant rainfall amounts over the next 6 days.

Cooler Days and Jacket Nights Ahead – TUESDAY VIDEO

Good Morning!  The front which has brought overnight and early morning rain will exit the state after Dawn.  Clouds will start this day, but bright sunshine will take over later.  Are you ready for some cooler days and more jacket nights?  The middle of the week looks beautiful.  Some more beneficial rain could be back with us by first thing Friday morning, but there are still many question marks about the weekend.  I’ll try to sort out the details for you on your Tuesday morning personal weather briefing.

Front reaches TLH by 1PM.  AM clouds give way to a lot of sun.  NICE day.  Jacket weather tonight.

Coolest morning so far?   Wednesday morning could be for some.  CHILLY.  Jacket weather.

More beneficial rain could be back by first thing Friday.  The rest of the weekend weather details are still very much up for debate.

GREAT Weather Wednesday and Thursday.  Cool days.  Jacket nights.  Rain returns by Friday morning.  Still question marks on how the weekend weather details will come together.  Stay tuned.
