Severe thunderstorm watch for much of central Alabama until 10PM. Scattered wind gusts to 70 mph possible. Hail to ping pong size. Prolific lightning.
Good Morning! There’s two important stories this weekend. The heat continues. Heat index as high as 105 today and 102-105 Sunday. Big Heat can produce Big Storms. An approaching southward moving front will also be a big player this weekend. The combination will lead to strong to severe storms for the northern 2/3 of the state today. Sunday, as the front draws closer, SPC has much of central Alabama in a Level 2 threat. Scattered Severe thunderstorm warnings are a good bet. Damaging wind gusts is the main risk, along with prolific lightning. Following the frontal passage, the news is good! Temperatures and humidity levels will be much more reasonable Monday through Thursday. We could even see some upper 60’s at night by mid-week. It will be a very welcome change.
TODAY: Sun/cloud mix. Hot again. High in the upper 90’s. Heat Index as high as 105. Scattered random storms, especially in the afternoon and evening. Some storms could be strong/ severe. Our Weather App will keep you on top of the action. Light wind. Low 75.
The Marginal Severe Risk will mainly be confined to the northern counties today. Damaging wind gusts and prolific lightning.
. HURRICANE ERNESTO: Ernesto is currently assaulting the island nation of Bermuda, making landfall around 4:30 AM EDT this morning. Winds are currently 85 mph. It could graze some of the maritime Canadian provinces this weekend.
ERNESTO is the only player in the tropics at the moment. There are, however a number of tropical waves in the Tropical Atlantic main development region.
NEXT FEW DAYS: Sunday will be stormy in spots. Scattered strong to severe storms. Expect upper 90’s Sunday. Heat index 102-105. But, after the front moves through, the news is good for the week ahead. Temperatures and humidity levels will be much more reasonable Monday through Thursday.
